Lamp’s Fall Concerts 2023
It’s only mid-August, but it’s already time to put our minds to Lamp’s 2023 Autumn Concert Series!
Our first performance of the season will be free for everyone! Lamp’s A Little Light Music concert series is the perfect way to introduce yourself to the music and artists who are resident at Lamp. Whether you’re new to Lamp, new to classical music, or just plain old interested, A Little Light Music is a great place to spend an hour or so on a Wednesday evening. Our Fall concert series kicks off on Wednesday October 11, and will look at Auber’s opera Le domino noir. A Little Light Music concerts can transport you anywhere, as the artists answer questions from the audience, and those questions lead the artists & audience on a very unique journey. If you are interested in opera, or if you think you might be, why not come to a totally free concert and dip your toes in.
Our first ticketed performance of the series will be Sunday October 15 when, you guessed it, Lamp’s amazing resident artists will perform the opera you were introduced to the previous Wednesday. An opéra-comique written by Daniel Auber, the story of Le domino noir is naturalistic; a comedy of the 'present day', of balls and bachelor parties, of housekeepers and porters. Directing the production is Bénédicte Jourdois and Isabelle David.
Later in October one of our favourite resident pianists returns – Anna Han. Anna will be here for a short couple of weeks, but will perform twice – on October 18 and again on October 25. Currently based in Germany, Anna never fails to astound our audience with her exceptional performance which she seamlessly mixes with an informative, funny, and intimate dialogue; you leave the concert hall feeling like you’re forever friends.
In between Anna’s two performances soprano/pianist Rachel Fenlon returns to Lamp for a quick residency, and she will perform for us on the afternoon of October 22. Rachel is wowing stages around the world with her incredibly ability to self-accompany. This is no easy task, but one Rachel has truly mastered and is celebrated for around the world. If you’re interested in reading more about Rachel, visit her website.
In November, the Academy Jazz Club returns on the evening of November 11 for a glorious night of jazz with Glenn Patscha and his trio. Glenn is an extremely talented international award-winning jazz performer who has performed with an outstanding list of superstars that like Bettye LaVette, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow and so, so many more. Our jazz nights tend to sell out, and with performers like Glenn appearing that’s not really a surprise.
On November 15, Matthias McIntire returns to our stage for the second A Little Light Music performance. Matthias is an audience favourite – performing classical pieces that make you cry, his own compositions that give you goosebumps, and then he mixes in some foot-stomping pieces that make you feel you’re in Cape Breton.
Our final performance is one I’m pretty excited about – Alex Yang is a 14-year old who is currently (as I write this) in Italy taking part a masterclass with Angela Hewitt (our Artistic Director Burt Wathen and his lovely wife Jane are there in the audience). Alex received one of the very top awards in Canada’s National Music Festival, and a Nova Scotian! How can we not be a part of promoting this incredibly talented young artist. Entrance to Alex’s concert on December 3rd is ‘by donation’ – pay what you can.
