James Sommerville is a Canadian french horn player and conductor who has performed with some of the world’s leading orchestras and ensembles and was a past principal first horn with Symphony Nova Scotia.
He has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across Canada, the United States and Europe. He has recorded for CBC, Marquis, Deutsche Grammophon and Decca labels. He is also a composer and arranger of horn music.
Sommerville later held held principal horn positions with the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Until recently he was the principal horn for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he premiered Elliott Carter’s Horn Concerto in 2007.
He has also been the conductor and music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007 to 2015. He teaches at the Longy School of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music.
Sommerville is a versatile musician who can play both modern and historical horns. He has performed with period-instrument groups such as the Handel & Haydn Society and Les Violons du Roy. He holds Canadian, American and Irish citizenships.
